Cat 5e vs Cat 6

Written by Super User on .

There is a great deal of confusion surrounding Cat 5e and Cat 6 Ethernet cable when undertaking networked AV projects, whether in the home or as part of a more extensive office installation. Most of this confusion comes from a misunderstanding about what exactly the two types of cable will deliver in terms of certified performance.

Networks will always run at the speed of the slowest device. So, it is important to ensure all the devices on the network have network interfaces that will take full advantage of the maximum available transmission capability.

Cat 5e is certified to run up to 100Mbit/s. Although, it is quite capable of transmitting data at up to 1Gbit/s but, Cat 5e cable is not certified to perform the task at this speed. Further, Cat 5e reduces ‘crosstalk’, the interference sometimes experienced between the wires inside the cable, making the cable more reliable.

Cat 6, however, is certified to run at up to 10Gbit/s. It also has stricter specifications surrounding interference inside the cable leading to an overall improvement in reliability and speed.

A word of caution, just like Cat 5e, Cat 6 can only perform at optimal speeds provided all the devices on the network are able to operate at higher transmission rates. Otherwise, it will default to the slower speed in a similar fashion to Cat 5e.

Our fully-qualified installation engineers always check the network integrity, to ensure the correct specification of cabling is employed and, fit for purpose.

Does anyone have a stranger location for their satellite dish? Let us know.

Cable Spaghetti!

About a week ago, you very kindly waved a magic wand at our spaghetti of a TV and hard disk recorder and, got it all working. Your charge for your expertise was very reasonable indeed. It’s good to know that there are people such as your selves who know what they’re doing and, don’t charge the earth for doing it.

We’d love to use you again. My wife is a little annoyed with our cats, whom she’s blaming for disconnecting one of the quad satellite feeds so that she can no longer record one program while watching another. Next time you’re in Chiddingfold could you please come and work your magic again..
